Planning and Formatting a Letter

Real world: See a famous typed letter by Albert Einstein.

For your letter project, write a letter to the editor as one of the main characters from Karen Hesse's Witness. Click here to read last year's published letters.

A letter to the editor is a letter sent to a publication about issues of concern to its readers. Usually, letters are intended for publication.

1. Choose which character you will be from:
Percelle Johnson
Sara Chickering
Fitzgerald Flitt
Iris Weaver
Esther Hirsh
Johnny Reeves
Leanora Sutter
Merlin Van Tornhout
Viola Pettibone
Harvey Pettibone

Write to Renyard Alexander, the editor, to express your concerns regarding society's problems/issues.

2. Brainstorm a list of "issues and problems" that this character would be concerned about. This is where you need to understand the character's perspective on the traditional and modern values of society. (Consider: Women's roles, Prohibition, Ku Klux Klan, Immigration, Fundamentalism. You can brainstorm using Inspiration or the class handout.

3. Now Construct your letter. Using Word tools like the ruler and show invisibles, you can format a letter with proper indenting and margins.

Keep in Mind:
- The audience is the entire town - all townspeople will read the newspaper.
- Your character has a unique perspective and voice. Work at crafting the perspective and voice.
