World Literature Survey

Our world is home to over 13,000 ethnic groups, speaking over 8,000 languages, boasting 20,000 years worth of stories.

This course attempts to open the door to the world beyond Europe and the United States, sampling some contemporary bestsellers from across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

LANGUAGE AND MEDIA

How do we know what we know?

Our sense of what is and isn't possible, our sense of how we're supposed to look and act - in short, our entire world view- is shaped by media.  In this class, we will examine how what we read in books or online, what we watch on TV or in movie theaters, all creates our sense of reality.   We'll learn about bias, gatekeepers, word choice and all sorts of tools that used to influence us, and that we can use to influence others.

Contemporary Literature II: Modern American Identity

American Literature did not begin and end with the Puritans and The Great Gatsby. Contemporary Literature II opens the door to a variety of modern voices from across the cultural spectrum of the USA. These authors ask and wrestle with the question, in a country of dozens of ethnicities, religions, and races - "What does it mean to be American?"

Why do people all over the world make such a big deal out of this one man who uses such strange language?

We'll dive deep into Shakespeare's world in all of its beauty, humor, horror and confusion...it's a journey well worth taking!
