  .

In this class, the first and second quarters count as 20 % each of the grade with the third and fourth quarters counting for 30 % each. In other words, a student needs to learn all year in order to be successful in a higher level the following year.

1. GRADES

In each quarter, typically, the grades will be distributed as follows:
Quizzes 30 %
Test 40 %
Oral 30 %
Participation 10 %
(Quizzes and Tests contain a listening section)

2. RUBRICS

A. Most of the quizzes come with the textbook and are graded according to the publisher. However, I often add a section with extra points on vocabulary not in the textbook or with additional grammar points. Same for the tests.

B. The oral grade depends on speaking and on understanding. Typically, there is a short reading part, either of a list of particularly hard to pronounce words or a paragraph from a passage. Or the students are listening to a list of numbers or vocab words and have to write them in English. There can also be questions to answer.

Reading a list of 11 hard-to-pronounce words 10 out of 11 = A +
9 out of 11 = A etc...

C. PARTICIPATION

Participation in class means :
- sharing with the class. For instance, what activities the student did during the weekend or the night before or any other news.
- volunteering to come to the board or the front of the class.
- answering questions.

When a student participates, the quality of the French is not graded. Only the fact that the student is willing to say or do something is taken into account.
