ADDITIVE SCULPTURE - Sculpture which is built up or constructed from separate parts.
ASYMMETRICAL - Not symmetrical, but not necessarily unbalanced.
AXIS - An imaginary line passing through a figure, building, sculpture, etc. about which its principle parts are arranged.
BALANCE - The achievement of equilibrium among the various parts of a composition.
CARVING - Cutting, hewing, or chipping a material to arrive at a form. A direct, subtractive method usually associated with mass, weight, solidity and definitive form.
CASTING - A method of reproducing a work of sculpture, usually by pouring a hardening liquid into a mold bearing its impression. Casting can also be an art form in itself where an original composition is designed specifically to be cast or to produce units which can be assembled.
COMPOSITION - The organization or arrangement of the forms in a work of art.
CONSTRUCTION - Primarily an additive process where various materials are combined or built up to achieve a composition.
CONTOUR - The outline of an object or shape.
FOCAL POINT- A dominant area of major interest in a composition upon which the eyes focus more frequently than on others.
KINETIC SCULPTURE- Sculpture which is made to be seen while all or part of it is set in motion by mechanical or natural means.
MEDIUM - The physical material with which an artist works.
MOBILE - A delicately balanced construction of movable parts made to be suspended in such a way that the parts will be set in motion by the movements of the air.
MODELING - The creation of three-dimensional forms by working a soft or pliable material by hand or with tools. Can be additive, subtractive, or a combination of both.
PROPORTION - The relation, or ratio, of one part to the whole in regard to size, height, width, length, or depth.
RELIEF SCULPTURE- Sculpture which is not freestanding, but is carved or cast so that it projects from a surface of which it is part.
SCULPTURE IN RELIEF- A sculpture meant to be seen from one side only.
SCULPTURE IN THE ROUND- A freestanding composition designed to be seen from all sides.
SUBTRACTIVE SCULPTURE - Sculpture which is created by reducing a material through cutting, chipping, or other subtractive methods.
SYMMETRY - Balance achieved by correspondence of parts on either side of a central axis.
TACTILE- Pertaining to the sense of touch.
TERRA COTTA - An earthenware clay, generally red in color and containing grog. It is commonly used for ceramic sculpture due to its ability to resist warping.
VOLUME - Any three-dimensional quantity bounded or enclosed, whether a solid or a void.
