About Us

The goal of the Alcott School Library Media Program is to provide a combination of resources, curriculum, and activities so that students will find information, be effective, confident users of information and ideas, and develop and sustain the habit and enjoyment of reading and learning throughout their lives. With that goal in mind we:

  • Teach strategies for the selection, retrieval, evaluation, and use of information
  • Connect classroom learning to library curriculum related materials and learning experiences
  • Provide access to a variety of genres for recreational reading
  • Share multicultural perspectives that represent the richness of a diverse world
  • Provide resources and activities for a variety of learning styles
  • Encourage students to be critical evaluators of information, and to appreciate and delight in the written word
  • Expect respect for one another, and library resources
  • Strive to create a comfortable, safe, welcoming environment for all students, and their Alcott community

A natural piece of library classes involves work with students around the development of mutual respect and appropriate social behaviors. The Library Rules and Courtesies shared here have been reviewed with all grade 3-5 students, and every effort is made to make sure each child understands each point. A very similar version is shared with grades K-2.
