Massachusetts Children's Book Award

All Alcott 4th & 5th grade students are invited to participate in the Massachusetts Children's Book Award Program. This is a reading incentive program designed for Grade 4 through 6 children that our library has participated in for the past several years. It's a great opportunity for children to read books shared by their peers throughout Massachusetts, to vote for their favorite, and to see how other children vote for the same titles. Criteria for the Master List of titles include literary quality, variety of genres, multicultural representation, and reader appeal.

If students read, or have read to them, 5 of 25 selected titles, they may cast their ballot for their favorite book at the end of February. They vote during their library class, and the results are tallied and submitted to Salem State College, the program sponsor.

Each voting child receives a certificate of participation, and is invited to a library ice cream gathering in June when a letter from the winning author is made available. It's our hope that children consider the program a fun experience in good reading! A master list of titles is handed out to students in September during library classes, and is always available in the library. The list is shared with our public librarians as well. For more information log on to the Salem State College web site.
