Course Description: Advanced Placement Calculus is an intensive college level course covering differential and integral calculus. We will examine calculus from both a theoretical and applied perspective, and attempt to find a middleground between rigor and intuition. Classroom time will be devoted to lecture, discussion, and problem solving. We will cover, in whole or in part, chapters 1-8 of the text. Use of the graphing calculator is required.
Text: CALCULUS, Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic by Finney, Demana,Waits,& Kennedy
Your text is being loaned to you and must be maintained and returned in good condition. In keeping with department policy, final course grades and credit will be issued only after the text is returned or monetary replacement value is paid.
Homework: Homework will be assigned and checked regularly. Attempt all problems. If a student has difficulty with a problem he/she should copy the problem or question onto their homework sheet and leave space to fill in the solution. Solutions to the problems in whole or in part will be posted in the classroom. If a student has difficulty with a problem after reading through the posted solutions, he/she should write the page and problem number on a designated space on the chalkboard before class begins. Time permitting, selected homework problems will be discussed in class.
Students will receive a homework grade of 2, 1, or 0 points depending on the quality and timeliness of the homework. Please write homework solutions on loose-leaf paper so that it may be collected and checked. When we finish covering a section of the textbook in class, all homework assignments associated with that section are due in class on the following day.
Extra Help: Students needing clarification of a topic covered in class, help with a homework problem , or other academic assistance are encouraged to seek extra help from the teacher or in the MARC.
Attendance: Students are expected to read and follow the school’s attendance policy as stated in the Student Handbook.
A make-up test will only be given for excused absences. Students who are absent on the day of a scheduled test, or on the day prior to the day of the test, should be ready to take a make-up on the day they return to school. Students who miss a test due to an absence that exceeds two days in length should make special arrangements for a makeup.
Tests , Quizzes, and Graded Assignments: Tests will be announced in advance. Quizzes will be usually be announced in advance, but I reserve the right to give unannounced quizzes. There will also be graded take home assignmnents.
Tests and quizzes may be entirely calculator active, entirely calculator inactive, or partially calculator active and partially calculator inactive.
Grades: Quarter grades are obtained by averaging tests, quizzes, homework, and other graded assignments giving due weight to each. (In other words, the total number of points earned by the student divided by the total number of points available.)
Quarter grades are weighted equally. The mid-year exam will carry one-half the weight of a quarter grade. Given the extensive review and testing that we will do prior to the Advanced Placement Exam, there will be no final exam given after the AP Calculus Exam. We will, however, have at least one cumulative test that will become part of your fourth quarter grade.
Classroom Guidelines:
1. Class participation is highly encouraged. A student , however, must refrain from talking unless he/she has his/her hand raised and is called on by the teacher to ask or answer a question, or unless he/she is assigned to work in a group.
2. Students must be in class, in their seats when the bell rings. Students who arrive late, for whatever reason, should see the teacher after class to have the matter resolved. If the student fails in this responsibility, he/she may have to deal with the consequences of an unexcused absence.
3. Class is not over until I have dismissed you, even if the bell has rung. Students will be dismissed once desks and chairs are returned to their proper position and all litter is picked up.
