3rd Grade

Underground

Students are asked to put on their x-ray eyes and imagine what might be happening underground. Using only a pencil students are challenged to think about how they will show the differences between different plains of space and texture. What are different ways they can use their pencil? At the end of class students share their ideas and reflect on an underground drawing by artist Saul Steinberg.

Puppets

Students create these whimsical puppets while exploring form and paper mache.

Shells

Students begin these thematic pictures by studying a variety of seashells. As they create observational drawings of the shells they think about size, placement and direction. When applying color students are asked to consider how they will delineate between positive and negative space so that their shells are emphasized. A final touch and added emphasis is added with gold or silver metallic pens.

Rooster- Observation

Students observe a large metal rooster. They use pencil to create shapes, textures and shadows. Some students add backgrounds to "liven up" their drawings.

Monochromatic Painting

Students learn to make tints and shades of a color by adding different amounts of white and black.
