Dream Houses
Students learn about different architectural elements such as columns, arches, and gables. They then create their own dream house incorporating at least 3 of the elements they have studied.
Tallest Structure Challenge
The Challenge: each student gets one 9 X 6 newsboard, masking tape and as many 3 X 6 pieces of tagboard as they need. In 40 minutes they have to build the tallest structure they can. The Structure must stand on its own for 30 seconds with out any physical support. Every student approaches this project differently. Some sit and create a plan others dive right in. Most students find success until they reach a certain height. As they work students discuss ideas that work and problems they are having. The last 20 minutes is spent discussing as a class what worked what didn't and what we learned about engineering and building that we didn't know before.
Buildings and Form
Students review the engineering principles that they discovered in the Tallest Structure Challenge. Their next challenge is to design a building by putting forms together. They need to think about the function of the building and how the outside of the building can give people clues as to what is inside. Students were to focus on craftsmanship while building forms in order to make a sturdy structure.
Monotype Printing
Students create one of a kind prints with tempera paints, soft cut rubber and other objects. They discuss color families and experiment with the materials as they work. How fast do they need to work? How much paint do they need. They also create reverse prints.
3d Paper Design
Students use their monoprints to create 3d relief works. Their first step is to choose the prints they will work with. What colors will they choose as the border in order to tie the piece together and how will they make their paper stand up.
Sihlouettes
Students create a collage from magazines that represent aspects of themselves.
Play with Clay- Art can Tell a Story
Students work in a circle of 8-10 students with a small amount of clay. They are asked to create a character that will be used for a story. After 5-10 minutes they are asked to stop and given instructions on where to move to next. At this point they are faced with someone elses character and must create a setting for this individual. After 5-10 minutes they move again and need to create a problem for the character and their final move brings them back to their original character where they have to create a solution to the problem. We then go around and share our lively and vivid stories. Students are challenged to think on their feet and think creatively as they are faced with each new challenge.
Accordian Book
Students create these visual stories using the principles learned in their classrooms. Who are the main characters? What is the setting? What propblem arises for the characters and how do they solve it?
Plaster Masks
Masks are worn throughout many cultures. In most cases they are used to transform the person wearing the mask into something else. Students look at the zodiac and other symbolic animals then decide which animals best represent them. Students build an armature out of newspaper then add plaster of paris as a top coat. Paints are used to add personal character.
Jazz Prints
Students spend time creating observational drawings of instruments and classmates playing instruments. They then design a final image by combining drawings they have done. Last, they create a collograph printing plate by turning their drawings into a collage. They print their images then add color to "jazz" them up.
