5th Grade
In fifth grade most lessons are based upon the theme: Who Am I? in order to give students the opportunity to look at who they are, how they got to be that way and what they hope to become. The end of the year is capped off by the 5th grade Art Retrospective where students gather work they have created throughout their lives and reflect on how they have grown or changed as an artist.
Wire Face
Students begin their work with wire by exploring continuous contour drawings where they are required to create a self portrait on paper without lifting their pencils. They then discuss the properties of wire and use their drawings to work out how they will connect interior shapes to exterior shapes in their sculptures.
Self Portrait Collage
Students work for two weeks creating self portrait drawings of their entire face and separate elements. In order to free up students who are often self conscious about their drawings we then cut out and collage the drawings together in a manner that says something about who they are.
Clay- Metaphor
Students are asked to reflect on their lives and choose an individual who has shaped who they are and what they believe, a family member, coach, teacher or any other influential person. They then discuss the idea that an object can often be used to represent something else. They are asked to think about the person they chose and think about an object that might represent that persons life in some way. A clay sculpture is then created.
Paper Mache Container
A container has an interior and an exterior. Students create papermache containers around a balloon and are then asked to create a self portrait container that represents how they are seen by the world at large and how they see themselves on the inside.
Poem Picture
Students choose a poem that has meaning to them or that they created and are asked to create an image that represents the ideas in the poem. They are also asked to think about how they can incorporate the words of the poem into their artwork in order to create harmony with the image.
3D Postcard- A Journey
What is a journey? Students brainstorm the idea. A journey can be a physical trip from one place to another or an experience that changes you. Students are asked to think about a journey they have made in their lives and represent it in these 3d postcards. Students are challenged to create a pop out or moving part.
Happy Hats
Students create these paper mache hats based on the idea of what makes them happy.
