Concord Public School Summer Reading List

Every year the librarians of the Willard, Thoreau and Alcott Schools create a reading list for students. The list is organized by grade level. Great care is taken to create a blend of fun, new titles and children's classics. There are a variety of reading levels and interests represented in each list. A few tips for getting the most from the summer reading list:

Use the list as a starting point. Ask your child if there are any books he/she has already read on the list, and did he/she enjoy them?

Use the list as a tool to get to know your child as a reader.

  • Does your child have any favorite authors on the list?
  • Is there a topic of special interest your child wants to pursue over the summer?
  • Does your child have a favorite genre or type of book?

Additional Strategies:

  • Choose a book from the "Classics" page and read it aloud as a family.
  • Make sure your child always has a book at hand. Ask what is happening in the story.
  • Model summer pleasure reading for your child. Children who see a parent reading for pleasure are more likely to read for pleasure themselves.
