FRESHMAN ENGLISH (111) Ms. Hull
Course Expectations: 2005-2006
Course Description : In this course, we study drama, nonfiction, poetry, and fiction in each of the quarters. Students begin the drama unit studying Greek drama and Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and finish with Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare. Students during the nonfiction unit typically read excerpts from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou and other works of nonfiction and also choose a nonfiction book to read independently. Students read a variety of poems in the poetry unit and also compile a poetry anthology. Lastly, we will study To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. One of the goals of the class is to develop a critical vocabulary for understanding and analyzing these different literary genres. In addition, writing, including long and short formal essays, essay tests, quizzes, and creative writing are emphasized in the course. Public speaking presentations will be incorporated into our study of literature as well as individual projects.
Materials Needed :
**3-Ring Binder**
**Planner ** in which to record homework
"The Yellow Packet"
Notebook paper
Pens/pencils
Grading : Quarterly grades will be determined on a point system by dividing the total points earned by the total points possible per quarter. Grades will be based on tests, papers, quizzes, homework, projects, presentations, and class participation. Typically, individual homework assignments and quizzes are worth 10-20 points while papers and projects are worth 50-100 points or more. The final grade for the course will be an average of your quarterly grades. The mid-term and final exams combined count as 20% of your final grade for the year.
Classroom Responsibilities : You are responsible for coming to class prepared every day. Bring a notebook (three-ring binder preferred), pen or pencil, an assignment pad, assigned homework, and any book we are reading. If a student is repeatedly unprepared for class, his/her class participation grade will reflect that carelessness.
You are responsible for books and materials that are signed out to you. If you do not have these materials or if they are damaged when it is time to return them, you will be charged the replacement cost.
You are expected to treat each other with courtesy and respect. In addition, during group work, you should not only be tolerant and cooperative with each other, but also supportive and encouraging. Discussion of differing or opposing ideas is expected and adds depth and interest to class; however, you are expected to listen attentively when others are speaking, give everyone a chance to participate, and never insult or intimidate another individual. Any inappropriate behavior will be dealt with seriously.
Attendance : You are responsible for reading and following the school's attendance policy as stated in the Handbook for Students and Parents, which you should have received the first day of school. Any unauthorized absence from class will exclude you from participation in co-curricular activities that school day.
Tardiness : Students are expected to be in the classroom and in their seats when the bell rings and to remain in their seats until dismissed by me. If you arrive late you must sign the late book. Unexcused late students will not have extra time to complete quizzes or other work that their classmates have started. If you are tardy three times this semester, you will have two days to come to an after school detention with me; you will be put to work in the English department. If you miss your detention you will be assigned a (3 hour) school detention. For each tardy after three, you will also be assigned a school detention. It is your responsibility to record your presence in the classroom by signing into the late book. I will not change your attendance record at a later date. Two unexcused tardies will result in an after-school detention. Additional tardies will include both detentions and phone calls home.
Restroom/ Stepping out of Class: You have the privilege in my class to use the restroom or get a drink from the water fountain without asking permission from me. Along with this privilege comes the responsibility of not abusing it. Do NOT take inordinate amounts of time to do these things and do not do them on a daily basis. Do NOT go to the cafeteria during my class, visit with friends, other teachers, the main office, or the guidance office. Talk to me if you have special issues regarding this policy.
Other Issues: Avoid being rude and discourteous:
TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE/ PAGER/ TEXT MESSAGE DURING CLASS!
Do not make or take calls or text messages during my class or while out of the room during class time.
*Make certain that all of your academic work is your own. This means:
*your homework is not copied from someone
*your eyes are always on your own paper during quiz/testing situations
*all research not your own is referenced with quotation marks and end notes
*you do not use Cliff's Notes or any other note source (hard copy or Internet) to supplement your reading
*you do not use the internet or any other source for writing papers for class unless the teacher has specifically authorized you to do so
Homework and Make-up Work : Homework assignments are expected to be completed and handed in at the beginning of class on the day that they are due. Late assignments will be marked down half a letter grade from the earned grade the first day it is late. They will be marked down a half grade for each subsequent day. In addition, if you miss two assignments, you will need to stay after school the day you miss the second assignment. All work missed due to an excused absence must be made up within one week of return to school, except in the case of an absence of more than one week. You are responsible for keeping track of missed assignments and making them up promptly. See me the first day you return from any excused absence to arrange to make up missed work.
Paper Rewrites : You have the option of rewriting any paper written outside of class. However, there are a few conditions: you must conference with me about the paper, submit the rewrite within one week of when you get the original back, and attach the original paper to the back of the rewrite. The original paper grade and the rewrite grade will be averaged.
