Daffodil Planting on the MHS Gardens on the Greenway - Volunteers needed!
On Monday, December 15th, the Society will be planting daffodils on the MHS Gardens on the Greenway in downtown Boston. Thanks to a generous donation of over 5,000 daffodil
bulbs by Brent & Becky's Bulbs of Virginia, we will have a glorious
burst of color in the gardens come spring.
When: Monday December 15, 2008 11 AM - 2 PM Where: The MHS garden across from the Intercontinental Hotel. Look for our horticulture truck. What to bring: We will have shovels and other tools available. You may want to bring gloves. Who to call: Joe Kunkel will be heading up this project. You can reach him at (502) 649-2936
Please consider joining us as a volunteer to plant these
early bloomers that will bring joy to Boston's citizens as early as
April.
In the meantime, enjoy the mental images immortalized by William Wordsworth in his ode to this lovely flower.
Daffodils (1804)
I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee; A poet could not be but gay, In such a jocund company! I gazed-and gazed-but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.
