Concord Middle School

Summer Reading Booklet
Summer 2008

Dear CMS students,

Summer is almost here!  As in the past, this summer’s reading program asks each of you to read a minimum of THREE books.  One is the required book for the grade you will be entering in the fall.  In addition, you should read one of the books from the Faculty Recommendations list for the grade you will begin in September.  Faculty Recommendations relate to the curriculum for each grade level and are arranged according to subject areas.  Your third reading selection is “free choice,” and it may come from any list in this brochure, our Concord Middle School library web site (http://mail.colonial.net~sclutter/library/index.htm) or any other appropriate book of your choice.  Be sure to consult the “Kid Picks” list for your grade to find the titles of books your peers have enjoyed.  We hope, of course, that you do even more reading than the minimum of three books!

Please complete the following two tasks as you read this summer:

1. Please keep track of your summer reading and write the title and author of the books you’ve read on the Summer Certificate at the end of this booklet.  Remember to have your  parents/guardians sign the certificate and bring it to your new English teacher in the fall.

2. In addition, please complete the focused literature activity for your grade level required read. You will find the focused activity outlined at the end of this booklet.  Do no forget to do this focused reading activity; it is very important for you to arrive to school in September completely prepared!

Finally, there will be three book talks this summer at the Concord Public Library where a grade level teacher will discuss the required reading book.  Please feel free to attend any of these talks:

Tuesday, July 15, 7 p.m.

6th grade book discussion with Ms. Pfaffenbach

When Zachary Beaver Came to Town

Tuesday, August 19, 7 p.m.

7th grade book discusssion with Ms. Regis
The Misfits

Tuesday, August 12, 7 p.m.

8th grade book bookk, Karen Pettyjohn, librarian

The House of the Scorpion

Have a wonderful and restful summer; see you in September!

Sincerely,

CMS Faculty
