6th Grade
When Zachary Beaver Came to Town, by Kimberly Willis Holt
As you read, focus your thinking on the following two questions:
1. How does Toby's understanding of himself change throughout the book given the personal problems he faces and those that he sees happening around him?
2. How does Zachary Beaver challenge other characters and the reader to "not judge a book by its cover"?
7th Grade
The Misfits, by James Howe
8th Grade
The House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer
For both "prompts" students should make note of page numbers and quotes.
1. Trace Matt's process of "growing-up." Identify specific incidents where he seems to have a moment of awareness.
2. Describe important aspects of the society in which Matt lives.
