1950: Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz Celebrate 10th
Wedding Anniversary in NYC Comedian Lucille Ball and actor-bandleader Desi Arnaz met
in 1940 while filming "Too Many Girls," a musical based on a Rogers
and Hammerstein Broadway hit. After dating for five months, Ball and Arnaz
eloped on November 30, 1940 and were married in a private ceremony at the Byram
River Beagle Club in Greenwich, Connecticut. At that time, Ball was in the
midst of filming "A Girl, a Guy, and a Gob." The couple left New York
City in 1941, moving to California. But in 1950, they returned to New York,
celebrating their ten-year wedding anniversary at the the Roxy Theater, an
elegant movie theater at 50th Street and Seventh Avenue. Ball and Arnaz are
best known for the popular television show "I Love Lucy," which ran
from 1951 until 1957 and which continues to be aired in reruns in 77 countries.
