Click Grading Criteria for a look at the rubric that House 2 teachers use to grade homework. Students are expected to work on English homework for no more than 30 minutes each school night. If the English homework assignment can be completed in under 30 minutes, the balance of time must be spent reading an Outside Reading book. (For more on Outside Reading, see the Literature section below.) In the event that no homework is assigned, students are expected to spend the entire 30 minutes reading. Click Behavior-Conduct-Participation Rubric to see the rubric that House 2 uses to measure student behavior, conduct, or participation. In Composition, students will write on a regular basis. While the focus is narrative writing, students will use the multi-step Writing Process to write expository pieces - from Open-Response paragraphs to multi-paragraph essays. Students will also write poetry, and will engage in writing research papers in conjunction with the study of Literature. Students will master the Writing Process as a tool to create their pieces. In Literature, students will read teacher-directed novels and will be expected to complete out-of-school reading as well. Much of the in-school reading will focus on fiction representing cultures around the world. At the start of each term, students will receive an Outside Reading Assignment. Students are expected to read outside of school. In Language, students are expected to master an understanding of sentence types and kinds, clauses and phrases, the 7 main parts of speech, and punctuation. At the start of each class period students will have a 5-10 minute mini-lesson on grammar. Students should expect regular comprehensive quizzes on sentence structures and grammar. Students will have a midterm and final test on grammar. School Supplies and Home Resources:
