Course Description:
This course is designed to improve your competence and confidence in writing. Through a variety of analytical and creative assignments, we’ll reinforce the writing process working on brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, and editing. Each day we will engage in writing or prewriting activities. In addition to in-class writing, you will be expected to complete out-of-class reading, grammar exercises, and writing.
Grading:
Grades are determined on a point system. The student’s average is computed by dividing the total points earned by the total possible points. Major papers are worth 100 points; shorter papers are worth 30-50 points. Quizzes on reading assignments and grammar range from 5-30 points. Homework points also vary depending upon the assignment. The final semester grade is determined by total points earned on all course work (80%) and the final exam (20%).
Classroom Expectations and Responsibilities:
1.) Students should come to class prepared to write every day and to participate in any class discussion and activities. Participation is an essential element in this class.
2.) Students should arrive on time and be ready to begin when the bell rings.
3.) Students should bring a pen or pencil to class every day. You also need to bring a three-ring binder or a folder in which to keep your handouts, grammar assignments, and homework. Your writing will be kept in the lab in a folder which I will give to you.
4.) You are responsible for maintaining in good condition any school materials. If you do not have these materials or if they are damaged when it is time to return them, you will be charged replacement costs. Because spilled food or drinks may cause damage to the computers, NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE WRITING LAB.
5.) If I am absent, I expect you to conduct yourselves in the same manner as I expect you to behave at all other times. Treat substitutes with courtesy and respect. If you do not provide evidence of an excused absence and you do not turn in an assignment on the day a substitute ran class, you will receive a zero for any work that was due, and you will not have the opportunity to make up the work.
Attendance:
Attendance is crucial in Writing Workshop. Since you are expected to write during each day of class, and writing each day is essential to both success in the course as well as to the improvement of your writing skills, any work missed during a day’s absence must be made up on your own time. See me if you need to schedule make-up time in the lab.
Tardiness:
I expect you to be in the lab ready to begin work when the bell rings. I also expect you to remain working until I ask you to close down your work station. If you are late to class, you need to sign the late book. If another faculty member has detained you, be sure to bring a note from that teacher. It is your responsibility to record your presence by signing the late book. Tardiness will result in appropriate action (grade reduction, detention, progress reports, calls home).
Due Dates and Make-up Work:
If you are absent on the day an assignment is due, you should submit the assignment the day you return. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to complete the work promptly.
