Henry Berlied - 1938

Henry was born with a set ofsprinter's legs to complement his competitive attitude and a
love ofsports. The result was a great all around athletic career at Concord High School
and beyond.

He was a running back and safety on some fine football teams under Coach AI Cook. His
football highlight was a hard fought 6-6 "victory" over Everett in 1937, played in Everett.
This was a tough city school with a long football tradition, and they were heavily favored
over the "farm boys" from Concord. Henry played a key role in the game, although he was
injured in the fourth quarter and his replacement caught a pass for the winning touchdown.
He was a forward on the basketball team which played in the armory at Everett and Stow
Streets. When Hunt Gym was built in 1937 the team moved into first class quarters and
joined the Middlesex League.

He was Captain of the track team as a Senior. As a sprinter he excelled in the 100, 220,
and 440 yard events, as well as the high jump and broad jump. He ran a 10.1 second 100
yard dash race in the Middlesex League Meet in 1938 which stood as a Concord High
School record for fifteen years.

After high school Henry went to work for Dover Ski Binding in West Concord and stayed
with the company until it went out of business 44 years later. He has four grown children,
Henry Jr. , Thomas, Barbara, and John.
