David Castelline, Coach
One of the greatest coaches in school history. David Castelline coached girl's soccer at CCHS for 11 years.
posting an amazing 170-1 8-14 record and winning a pair of state championships during his tenure.
A native of Acton. Casteillne was a Dual County League All-Star at Acton-Boxborough in basketball in
1971, leading the Colonials to the state tournament in his junior and senior years. Castelline attended Springfield College, playing freshman basketball and four years of varsity lacrosse before graduating in 1975.
Castelline came to Concord just two years later at the tender age of 24, taking over a girl's soccer program
which was in its Infancy. That all changed in a hurry. The Patriots won the first of 11 consecutive DCL
Championships in his first year and began a remarkable run of 18 consecutive trips to the state tournament.
The wins and accolades would continue to pile up, as the Patriots won state championships in 1979 and
1980 and Eastern Massachusetts titles in 1979. '80 and '81 and Casteillne won Boston Globe Coach of the
Year following the '79 and '84 seasons. The biggest honor came in 1987. as Castelline was recognized as
the Eastern Massachusetts, New England and National Soccer Coaches Association of America National
Coach of the Year following his final season at CCHS.
In his 11 years at CC, Castelline coached scores of players who went on to star in the college ranks .
including All - Americans Heidi Comeau (Vermont) and Tracy Brooks (Boston College) as well as
Sheila Watts (Boston College). Christine Taggart (UMass-Amherst). Anne Davidson (Bowdoin) and
Amy Shorey (Vermont). all of whom captained teams at the collegiate level. Castelline also coached
recently retired CCHS girl's coach Karyn Hesse Copland, a collegiate star at Boston College who
served as Castelline's assistant for two years before succeeding him as head coach in 1988, winning
a state championship of her own in 1990.
A resident of Sudbury, Dave is married to wife Anne and is the father of son Danny (eight) and
daughter Jessie (three) . Castelline, who taught science for several years at both Peabody and
Sanborn, completed work on his Doctorate Degree at the University of Massachusetts last year.
Currently the principal at Underwood Elementary School in Newton, Dave has coached his son's
soccer team for the past six years.
