Valentine P. Muscato 1947

A gifted athlete, natural leader, and dedicated coach, Muzzy exemplified the intense pride
and spirit of Conord High School athletics.

He captained the 1946 state Class D champion football team to an undefeated season
which turned out to be the start of Concord's legendary 59 game unbeaten streak. Speed
was his athletic trademark, and as a Senior he set a national 600 yard record at the
Bowdoin Interscholastic Games, then traveled to Madison Square Garden in New York
City where he won the national interscholastic 440 championship.

Heavily recruited, Muzzy chose Notre Dame and became a track star for the Fighting
Irish. He was voted Captain of the Indoor Track team and was the Central Collegiate 1/2
mile champion. He also earned the honor of National Spring Amateur Italian Track and
Field Athlete of 1951.

After graduating from Notre Dame in 1951 , Muzzy continued his track achievement in the
military by running for the 800 and 1,600 Meter Champion teams in the Inter-Allied and
Military Olympics meets in Europe.

He went on to an illustrious career at Oliver Ames High School, where he taught math and
biology, coached football , basketball, baseball, cross country, and track, and retired as
Athletic Director in 1990. His sharp wit and entertaining speaking ability at banquets was
legendary and will be sorely missed.
