GRAMMAR 7th grade language study consists of learning and applying the mechanics of formal English as well as English grammatical structures. Each term covers the following topics:
Term 1:
Sentence Study
-SIMPLE sentences
-COMPOUND sentences (including coordinating conjunctions)
-COMPLEX sentences (including subordinating conjunctions)
Nouns
-singular and plural nouns
-possessive case
-proper nouns and rules of capitalization
Verbs
-Action verbs (including direct and indirect objects)
-Linking verbs (including predicate nomnitave and adjective)
-Helping verbs (including verb phrases)
-Verb tense (present, past, future, perfect) |
Term 2:
Pronouns
-personal
-indefinite
-interrogative
-demonstrative
-pronoun/antecedent agreement
Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions
-common and proper adjectives
-adverbs vs. adjectives
-prepositional phrases as adjective and adverbs
Comma usage
-lists
-dates
-sentence structure (commas and phrases/clauses)
Semi-colon usage
-the semi-colon and clarity in listing
-sentence structure (semi-colon usage for combining sentences) |

Punctuating Titles
-italics/underlining/quotation marks

VOBCABULARY
Additionally, langauge study focuses on vocabualry acquisiton.7th graders will learn and use new words throughout the year.
FIGUARATIVE LANGUAGE and IMAGERY
7th graders study the art and meaning of figurative devices used by writers and poets.
| SIMILE: a comparison using the word "like" or "as" |
| METAPHOR: a comparison that does not use "like" or "as"; a stronger comparison than a simile |
| PERSONIFICATION: the giving of human qualitites to something non human |
| HYPERBOLE: and exaggeration used for dramatic effect |
| IMAGERY: language that evokes the five senses |
