From the Math Department
Hopefully, you have received the email from your child's math teacher outlining the criteria for math placement from the current year to the next. The math department wants you to be aware that this is a year long process that utilizes several different performance criteria. Each assessment attempts to capture a slightly different aspect of your child's math performance. The CML (Continental Math League contests) taps into non-routine problem solving. There are often several different paths to the solutions of these problems. The Prognosis tests measure the degree to which your child can apply a concept or procedure in problems which become increasingly more difficult and/or abstract. While classroom tests and quizzes assess mastery of material taught in specific units, the AMC and NEML assess many topics typically taught at this level in a multiple choice format. In developing this criteria, the math department has tried to look at your child from several perspectives over a long period of time in order to make the best match between your child and the instructional approach to the curriculum. Please contact your child's math teacher if you have questions about placement.
